The History of Electric Toothbrushes

The electric toothbrush was made for people suffering from poor motor skills, or people with braces.

A man named Tomlinson Mosely, first made an example of an electric toothbrush and was marketed as ‘Motodent’, on 13 december 1937. Then 17 years later, Dr. P.G Woog made the Bronx Odent. The construction of the electric toothbrushes was for patients who had limited motor skill or for people with orthodontic brackets.

In 1960, the Braxo Electric Toothbrush was launched in the U.S by E.R. SQUIBB AND Sons Pharmaceuticals. Then in the early 60’s, General Electric made the ‘automatic toothbrush’, and it was cordless with rechargeable NiCad batteries. The G.E Automatic Toothbrush came with a charging stand, and the first NiCad batteries had a brief lifespan.

Using an A.C line voltage appliance in the bathroom was problematic. By the early 1990s, Underwriter Laboratories, they did not want to certify lone-voltage appliances for bathroom use.

Newer versions used a step-down transformer to operate toothbrush at low voltage, for example 12, 16 or 24 volts. Wiring standards in many countries made sure there was protection of outlets in bath areas by RCD/GFCI device.

By the 90s, there were doubts about the safety of the Brozos design. The first ultrasonic toothbrush, it was named Ultima and it was registered in the U.S in 1992, and today many electric toothbrushes use ultrasound and sonic vibration.
