What does eco friendly mean and is it the same as green products?
You've probably heard of ecofriendly, but it is important to know what it actually means.
According to Cambridge Dictionary 'Eco friendly' means not harmful to the environment or trying to help the environment. In that sense, eco friendly products are made with the intention to not be harmful for the environment, or perhaps even better improving it. What are green products then? According to oboloo.com, these are products that are designed to have minimal impact on the environment, and could be from recycled or natural resources. In other words, eco friendly and green products have the same meaning and definition, just to clarify and not create confuson. For the purpose of this article, we'll use 'eco friendly'. The purpose of this article is to highlight and explain the amazing benefits of choosing eco friendly products and create more awareness for the general population:
Table of contents:

10. Fullfilment and well being
Summary
1.Environmental Preservation
Products that are eco friendly contribute to protecting our environment, that is by conserving natural resources. Many eco friendly products are recycled material, which minimizes deforestation, and reduces overly mining of raw materials. For examplel, if recycled paper material is applied industrially, it leads to fewer trees being cut down. Recycling minimizes the spread of landfills, that impacts the environment negatively. In that sense, eco friendly products are intended to enhance sustainable practices that ensures biodiversity and eco system protection.
2.Reducing GHG emissions
By choosing eco friendly products it reduces the carbon footprint, meaning it leads to lowering GHG emissions. From the manufacturing processes, it involves a reduction in emissions, materials are recovered products instead of using raw materials, which reduces energy consumption in the whole proces. This translates to less consumption of energy, therefore fewer fossil fuels are burned, leading to a reduction in carbon footprint. Even better, the use of fossil fuels will be less used due to regulations in the next coming years and decades. To give an example, the following table illustrates this:
As seen from the table, there is a significant difference when materials are recycled, the GHG emissions are much lower when recycled, ranging from 27 % up to 96 % (in the case of aluminium). Aluminum produces the most emissions as a raw material, however when recycled
it has the third lowest GHG emissons right after steel and organic waste. Steel has a huge reduction in emissions as well with 87 %. So it's pretty clear that recycled material reduces emissions by a lot.
3. Enhanced Air and Water Quality
Another great benefit going for ecofriendly products is it can enhance indoor air quality, which is important especially considering how much time we spend indoors. Moreover, studies have shown that going for environmentally friendly products can reduce the development of respiratory issue and other health concerns attributed with indoor pollution.
More specifically, traditional furniture and home items often times release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. This can cause various respiratory issues including asthma and allergies. The outdoor air quality will improve as well, since many people around the world are suffering from respitory issues, and roughly 7 million people due to air pollution. In comparison, in 2020 almost 10 million people died from cancer, so air pollution is no joke. Additionally, since conventional or tradional product often have harmful toxins and chemicals that pollute not only air, but water as well, which eco friendly product do not contain, it leads to higher water qualit and less water pollution.
4. Health and Safety
We've briefly covered how it can impact our health, and in this section we'll cover it more in
depth. As earlier mentioned, many of the eco friendly products are constructed by either re-
cycled material, or natural, so no harsh chemicals to be concerned about. This is important
especially if you have kids and or pets, and you want to make sure they grow up without these
concerns and problems. Moreover, eco friendly products are free from dangerous substances
such as pthalates, formaldehyde, among other hazardouz chemicals, that can be absorbed
via the skin and give long term health issues. So not good!
5. Reduction in Waste
By choosing eco friendly products you are contributing to less waste reduction in our world and
environment. This is because waste reduction and recycling is often times a priority for such products, moreover these products also usually comes with recyclable packaging, so its a win win
with both the packaging of the product, along side the products. Those who manfucture such
are definetely eco friendly conscious, so that's why everything that comes along side the product
they try to incorperate it as well. When more products are recycled, it also means that natural
resources are conserved and reduces the strain on landfills. Further, we actively participate in creating a circular economy where resources are reused rather than discarded after single use, aka. linear economy. By reducing waste, valuable materials can remain in production for as long as possible before they are disposed of or recycled properly.
6.Energy efficient
Majority of eco-friendly products are designed with energy efficiency in mind. This means they consume less electricity or fuel during their production and use. By using less energy, we can decrease our depedance on fossil fuels which are major contributors to GHG emissions. These are
usually products in the tech that apply energy efficiency items such as LED bulbs or even based on renewable energies to power devices, that are more energy efficent.
7.Cost effective
Choosing eco friendly products can actually be a great investment, since many of the products are more cost effective, in other words, due to their durability and sustainability, these products can save money over time since they have to be less replaced over time. Great examples are eco friendly cleaning products, or even a new trend on recycled durable plastic bags, that can hold a lot longer that the conventional choice. In some instances, you might have to give out a little bit extra in the beginning, but that's just an investment for you since you'll be saving money over time. Even sometimes, it's possible to find them at conventional prices. When the eco friendly products are from recycled material or mainly recycled, it can save manufacturers a lot of costs as well, since it reduces the production process, so it's a win for all.
8.Quality
We've covered it a bit above regarding the quality. It might come as a surprise, but eco friendly products are often times made of higher of quality than conventional products. The reason is that items made from natural and/or recycled material are designed to last longer and usually made from superior materials. In that sense, the objective is to design products that don't deteriate fast, which ultimately reduces the chances of more generating waste. For example, in tech, there is a great emphasis in quality in terms of durability, which gives the consumer a satisfying product and lasts longer, so you don't have to worry about its durability, that is also the idea of quality in eco friendly products, that are benefitted for us and the environment.
9. Ethical Practices
Eco friendly products majority of the cases support ethical and fair trade principles. They prioritize materials that are responsibly sourced, fair wages for workers, and support for local communities. In addition, ethical practices ensures the combat against modern slavery and child labor, and forces companies to integrate a more sustainable and responsible practices. Moreover, it can contribute to creating jobs and promote economic growth in the areas of local workers and communities. Further, the environmental products are usually certified which makes them reliable and approved by third parties, so you can ensure that the purchases you've made support a more equitable and social responsible global supply chain. By making eco friendly purchases, instead of conventional ones, we are helping in reducing very poor working conditions for workers, and unfair treatment of workers in general. This in return, will over time get conventional companies to adopt since more and more will purchase having ethical practices in mind.
10. Fullfilment and and well being
Another great benefit is that it allows your values to be aligned when purchasing, which studies have shown contribute to a sense of personal satisfaction and well being. They make us feel good, since the choice we make when we purchase are more sustainable for the future for us and our kids, and gives a sense of purpose and fullfilment. This is even more evident when you have the knowledge and information on why to choose eco friendly products, which we hopefully have made clear above. This is something we at Greenly World definetely can attest to as well with eco friendly products.
Summary
The benefits by choosing eco friendly products are truly amazing and have a variety of benefits, including health, environmental preservation, reduced ghg emissions, improved health, better ethical practices, increased well being and more! We hope you've been able to learn some interesting facts and benefits, and more inclined to choose them as well!
